Metal-Detector Settings Guide

A detector-agnostic framework for sensitivity, ground balance, noise cancel, recovery speed, discrimination, tones, frequency and target ID.

01Select modeMatch park, field, beach or gold mode to the site and target.
02Remove EMINoise-cancel before diagnosing the ground or raising sensitivity.
03Balance groundUse clean ground and rebalance after meaningful terrain changes.
04Tune one controlTest a known target after each sensitivity, recovery or filter change.

Bottom line

Start from the correct factory search mode, stabilize the detector, and change one setting at a time

Maximum sensitivity is not maximum usable depth. The best setup preserves repeatable target information in the current soil and EMI. Brand scales are not transferable: a recovery-speed value of 4 on one detector is not equivalent to 4 on another.

Detailed framework

What the evidence supports

Stability controls

Noise cancel addresses electromagnetic interference; ground balance addresses soil response; sensitivity controls amplification. Diagnose in that order. If chatter persists, lower sensitivity until responses become repeatable.

Separation versus weak-target response

Higher recovery speed/reactivity usually improves separation in dense targets and difficult ground but can shorten or weaken deep responses. Lower settings can enhance weak targets in clean ground while increasing smearing and masking.

Discrimination, notch and audio

Discrimination changes accepted target regions; notch removes narrower ranges; tone breaks organize audio; audio gain can make weak responses louder without creating depth. Small gold and trash overlap, so aggressive rejection has a real cost.

FAQ

Seven questions specific to this page

Should sensitivity always be set to maximum?

No. Use the highest setting that remains stable and repeatable in the current conditions.

What is the first adjustment for electrical chatter?

Run the detector’s noise-cancel or frequency-shift process before changing ground settings.

When should ground balance be repeated?

After material changes in soil, moisture, mineralization or beach zone.

Does faster recovery speed always improve performance?

No. It helps separation but can reduce weak-target response or depth in cleaner ground.

Does audio gain increase detection depth?

No. It amplifies audible weak responses; it does not create a signal the detector did not detect.

Should jewelry hunters notch out foil?

Usually not broadly; small gold jewelry can overlap foil-like target responses.

Can settings be copied between different brands?

Only conceptually. Numeric scales, programs and processing differ, so use the exact model manual.

Match the equipment to the site—not the other way around

Verify the current model, package, permission and recovery method.
