XP DEUS II Settings and Target ID Guide
How to interpret DEUS II target IDs without turning a variable 0–99 conductivity estimate into a misleading treasure chart.
Bottom line
Treat target ID as supporting evidence—the audio trace and repeatability are more useful than a single number
Target ID changes with program, frequency behavior, target depth, angle, alloy, corrosion, ground and nearby objects. A universal coin chart can be a useful air-test reference but is not a reliable dig/no-dig rule.

What matters in practice
How to read the scale
DEUS II reports a normalized target estimate on a 0–99 scale. Ferrous responses tend toward the low end and stronger conductors tend higher, but target categories overlap substantially.
Settings that alter decisions
Discrimination, notch, tone breaks, reactivity, audio response and program choice shape what you hear. They do not convert ID into chemical identification. Keep notch narrow until local testing proves its value.
A better field test
Note the ID range, audio quality, two-way repeatability, depth estimate and change after a 90-degree turn. Bent iron often degrades or shifts; good targets can also become unstable when deep or adjacent to iron.
FAQ
Seven questions specific to this page
What number is gold on the DEUS II?
There is no single gold number; size, karat, shape and orientation spread gold across low and mid conductors.
Do identical coins always have identical IDs?
No. Depth, angle, soil, corrosion and nearby metal can shift the reading.
Should I reject every low number?
No. Small jewelry and desirable low conductors can overlap foil and iron-adjacent responses.
Why does a target ID jump when I rotate?
Target shape, iron orientation, masking and ground response change the signal path.
Does Target ID Norm eliminate every program difference?
It improves consistency, but conditions and processing still affect the observed response.
Is a stable high number always a coin?
No. Aluminum, brass, copper scrap and some iron falses can imitate coin-like readings.
How should I create a target-ID chart?
Test targets in local ground, at several depths and orientations, and record ranges plus audio—not one ideal number.
