What is the best metal detector for a beginner?
The best beginner detector is stable in the user’s normal ground, provides understandable target information and has reliable support. A simple simultaneous multi-frequency model is a strong mixed-terrain baseline, but not every inland hunter needs every advanced feature.
Do I need simultaneous multi-frequency?
It is especially useful when conditions change or wet salt is involved. A good single-frequency detector can still perform well in suitable dry ground.
Does waterproof automatically mean good in saltwater?
No. Waterproof depth describes the enclosure; salt processing describes how the detector handles conductive wet sand and seawater.
How much should I spend on a first detector?
Spend enough for stable operation, a suitable coil and useful target feedback. Reserve budget for a pinpointer, recovery tool, audio and site access.
Are target ID numbers universal?
No. ID scales, normalization, coil choice and firmware vary. Learn repeatability, audio and behavior on your specific detector.
Can copied settings make a detector go deeper?
They provide a starting point, but maximum sensitivity does not guarantee usable depth. Soil, EMI, salt, target orientation and sweep control determine repeatability.
Which accessories should a beginner buy first?
