Garrett AT Pro Settings for Target ID

AT Pro reports conductivity from 0–99, with iron discrimination adjustable 0–40. The display is useful for trends, but proportional Pro audio and cross-sweep behavior remain essential.

Step 1Use Pro audioPro Zero preserves signal-strength and shape information.
Step 2Calibrate locallyAir-test and in-ground test the actual coins you pursue.
Step 3Watch repeatabilitySweep from two directions at controlled height.
Step 4Discriminate lastRaise Iron Disc only for a measured iron problem.

Bottom line

Use Pro Zero with low discrimination while building a local ID chart

Ground balance, run stable sensitivity, keep Iron Disc low enough to hear site context and scan known local coins and trash. Treat a tight repeatable number as stronger evidence—not certainty.

Operating rule: Treat every number as a starting point. Test on representative targets, change one control at a time and retain only repeatable improvements.

Adjustment method

Test the setting instead of copying it

Step 1

Use Pro audio

Pro Zero preserves signal-strength and shape information.

Step 2

Calibrate locally

Air-test and in-ground test the actual coins you pursue.

Step 3

Watch repeatability

Sweep from two directions at controlled height.

Step 4

Discriminate last

Raise Iron Disc only for a measured iron problem.

Decision analysis

What actually changes the result

The 0–99 number represents conductivity response. It cannot identify composition. Aluminum, brass, gold and some coins can overlap.

Iron Disc tops out at 40. That does not mean every ID above 40 is desirable or every reading below it is worthless; mixed and deep targets can pull the response.

Pro audio adds geometry clues. Smooth compact responses differ from broad irregular iron, while Iron Audio can reveal grunts around bottle caps. Neither is infallible.

FAQ

Seven questions specific to this detector

What is Garrett AT Pro’s Target ID range?

Garrett specifies a numeric conductivity scale from 0 to 99.

What IDs are iron on AT Pro?

The adjustable iron-discrimination region spans 0–40, but deep or mixed targets can cross boundaries.

Does an ID above 40 guarantee a good target?

No. Aluminum and other trash are conductive too, and target shape/depth influence the response.

Why does a coin ID jump?

Orientation, depth, soil mineralization, corrosion and adjacent targets can distort or mix the signal.

Is Pro Zero better than Pro Coin for learning IDs?

Usually yes because it keeps more audio and target context; Pro Coin is convenient when coin hunting in familiar trash.

Should Iron Audio be on all the time?

Use it mainly to inspect questionable targets; continuous iron audio can create fatigue in dense trash.

Can air-test IDs be used as exact field numbers?

No. Air tests establish relative behavior, but in-ground conditions usually broaden or shift the response.
