Garrett AT Pro Settings for beach
AT Pro is submersible and works well on dry sand and freshwater, but its 15 kHz single-frequency design is challenging on conductive wet ocean salt. Settings must reflect that limit.
Bottom line
Use Pro Zero for freshwater and dry sand; detune deliberately on wet salt
Ground balance at the search line, use Pro Zero with low iron discrimination, set sensitivity below chatter and cross-check targets. On wet salt, manually offset ground balance only as needed and expect reduced sensitivity and depth.
Field setup
Starting points—not universal presets
| Situation | Mode / baseline | First adjustment | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry ocean sand | Pro Zero | Iron Disc about 0–20 | High stable sensitivity |
| Freshwater sand/wading | Pro Zero | Fresh ground balance | Use waterproof headphones if submerged |
| Wet ocean sand | Pro Zero | Manual balance/offset as needed | Lower sensitivity; slow consistent sweep |
| Heavy iron patch | Pro Zero | Iron Disc about 20–35; Iron Audio checks | Do not max to 40 without testing losses |
Adjustment method
Test the setting instead of copying it
Classify the beach
Dry/freshwater and conductive ocean wet sand behave differently.
Select Pro Zero
Retains proportional audio and broad target evidence.
Balance at the zone
Rebalance whenever moving from dry to wet or into water.
Control instability
Lower sensitivity before adding heavy discrimination.
Decision analysis
What actually changes the result
Waterproof is not salt-optimized. AT Pro can be submerged to its published limit, but conductive salt challenges a single 15 kHz VLF in ways freshwater does not.
Pro audio preserves information. Signal strength and target edges are easier to hear than in Standard tones. That helps identify bottle caps and mixed targets when paired with Iron Audio checks.
A ground-balance offset is a compromise. It may quiet wet salt at the cost of sensitivity. If wet-salt hunting is routine, a simultaneous multi-frequency salt platform is the better hardware answer.
FAQ
Seven questions specific to this detector
What is the best AT Pro beach mode?
Pro Zero is the broad starting point because it retains proportional audio and avoids aggressive rejection.
Is AT Pro suitable for saltwater beaches?
It is physically waterproof, but its single 15 kHz operation is difficult on conductive wet salt and surf.
What Iron Discrimination should I start with?
Use little or none in clean sand; increase only enough to manage measured iron, generally staying below the maximum.
Should Iron Audio remain on?
Use it to inspect questionable or clipped signals; continuous use in iron can be tiring.
Why must I rebalance at the waterline?
Dry sand, wet salt and submerged ground have different responses; the previous balance may no longer be valid.
Can I run full sensitivity in wet salt?
Usually not stably. Reduce it until falsing stops, accepting that the platform will lose some depth.
Are the supplied headphones waterproof?
Do not assume so. The detector housing is submersible, but submerged use requires Garrett-compatible waterproof headphones.
